Texas Holdem Rules

Texas Holdem Poker has never enjoyed the celebrated spotlight as it is currently, due in a major way to the televised versions offered on many of the nations cable channels. This surge in popularity has spilled over to the internet's offering of Online Poker Rooms and many thousands of gamblers from all walks of life, play every day. To get the most out of the game, there are some basic rules that you'll need to know, then you too can jump right in and start playing this exciting game of poker.

The games consists of a designated person who acts as the dealer, and at least two players. The object of the game is to make the best 5 card poker hand from the cards in your hand combined with the five community cards that are laid out in the middle of the table. Since the deal is not passed on to other players, a Dealer Button is used and is placed in front of each player one at a time to represent the starting point of each deal. The dealer will deal the first card to the person to the immediate left of the player that has the Dealer Button in front of him. On the next deal the Dealer Button is moved to the next player in turn.

The game begins with the two players to the immediate left of the dealer, placing bets called the Small Blind and the Big Blind. The Small Blind is half the minimum bet allowed and the Big Blind is equal to the minimum allowed bet. The  Dealer then gives each player two face down cards, one at a time. The players can then look at  their cards and decide the strength or the possibility of these cards being used in a ranking poker hand. At this time bets can be called, players may raise or players may fold at this point. Once this round of betting is over, then the Dealer will deal out three cards to the middle of the table, this is called The Flop. This round of betting will now include the option of Checking to the other players, this is a way to try to determine the strength of the other  players hand. The next card dealt to the community cards is called The Turn, and betting resumes around the table until all players are accounted for or folded. The fifth and final card is dealt to the community cards and this card is called The River. At this point there are not usually many players left in the game. The final round of betting goes around to the remaining players and at the end of betting it's time to show your hand. The player with the highest ranking hand wins the pot, the Dealer Button is moved to the next player in line, and a new game begins.
